Standards

These are the standards which I have to achieve to gain QTS ((Qualified Teacher Status))
PROFESSIONAL VALUES AND PRACTICE
(see 3.3 standards: classroom management also)
1.1 They have high expectations of all pupils
1.2 They treat pupils consistently
1.3 They demonstrate and promote the positive values, attitudes and behaviour
1.4 They communicate well with parents and carers
1.5 They contribute to and join in the corporate life of schools
1.6 They understand the contribution that staff and other professionals make to teaching and learning – could relate to use of TAs, other staff associated with lessons, must be demonstrated or documented
1.7 They are able to improve their own teaching, by evaluating it (relate to the way targets/focus/evaluation from previous teaching is related to this lesson)
1.8 They are aware of, and work within, the statutory frameworks relating to teachers’ responsibilities?

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
may be contributed to by practice in lessons

2.1 They have a secure knowledge and understanding of the subject(s)* they are trained to teach. For those qualifying to teach secondary pupils this knowledge and understanding should be at a standard equivalent to degree level.
c – KS3 or d – KS4 and post 16
2.2 They are familiar with the POS for Citizenship and framework for PHE
2.3 They are aware of the nature of education and the curriculum in KS2
2.4 They understand how learning is affected by the physical, intellectual, linguistic, social cultural and emotional development of pupils
2.5 They use ICT effectively (both to teach and wider professional role)
2.6 They understand their responsibilities under the SEN Code of Practice
2.7 They know a range of strategies to promote good behaviour

TEACHING
Planning

3.1.1 They set challenging teaching and learning objectives appropriate for the class
3.1.2 They use these objectives to plan lessons, and sequences of lessons
3.1.3 They select, prepare and organise resources, and use them safely
3.1.4 They take part in, and contribute to, teaching teams, within the school. They deploy TAs appropriately to support pupils’ learning.
3.1.5 They plan opportunities, where appropriate, for pupils to learn in out-of-school contexts.

Assessment

3.2.1 They use monitoring and assessment strategies to evaluate learning
3.2.2 They monitor and assess whilst teaching, give immediate and constructive feedback
3.2.3 They assess pupils’ progress accurately using level descriptors, criteria for national qualifications etc.
3.2.4 They identify and support pupils who are under-achieving – using prior attainment data, information from teaching staff, discussion – strategies should be evidence within planning and practice
3.2.5 They can identify levels of attainment for pupils with EAL and plan appropriately
3.2.6 They record pupils’ progress systematically and uses this information in assessment and planning (evident in planning, feedback discussion about teaching/learning) – over time (evidence of marking, recording, teaching a sequence)
3.2.7 They use these records to give oral/written reports to parents, carers, etc
Teaching and classroom management

3.3.1 They have high expectations of pupils and builds successful teaching/learning relationships (purposeful learning environment)
3.3.2 They can teach the required knowledge, skills etc relevant to the age range/subject
c. teach Key Stage 3 competently to NC PoS, frameworks, etc
d. Teach Key Stage 4, post-16 competently to NC PoS, exam syllabus, etc
3.3.3 They teach clearly structured lessons which interest and motivate pupils
3.3.4 They differentiate teaching to meet needs of the most and least able pupils in class
3.3.5 They can support learning of EAL pupils
3.3.6 They take account of varying interests and experiences of all pupils
3.3.7 They organise and manage teaching time effectively
3.3.8 They organise and manage teaching spaces, tools, resources safely and effectively
3.3.9 They anticipate and manage pupils’ behaviour
3.3.10 They use ICT effectively in teaching
3.3.11 They take responsibility for teaching classes over a sustained and substantial period of time
3.3.12 They set homework or other out of class work which consolidates classwork
3.3.13 They work collaboratively with other professionals (TAs, mentor, pupils, teachers, technical support staff and so on)
3.3.14 They respond effectively to equal opportunities issues
